The new Investment Company Institute (ICI) numbers on the staggering amount of total wealth across all retirement plans are out. The total amount is $48.1 trillion as of 3rd quarter, 2025. Of that, $18.9 trillion is in IRA assets and $13.9 trillion is in Defined Contribution (DC) plans.
Approximately, how much is in TAX-DEFERRED accounts?
Approximately $16.5 trillion in IRAs!
Most of the $13.9 trillion in DC plans are tax-deferred!

Here is one chart from the report that shows the assets by sector and growth over time, and you can see how IRA assets now dominate the market and how annuities are only a fraction of the market (although, I do not believe the stats includes annuities sold in RIAs which is a growing market)..
Roth Conversion Marketplace is the biggest in the industry
I misspoke last week, calling this a $13 trillion opportunity. Those numbers were dated; it’s actually much bigger, and that’s why everyone is marketing Roth Conversions as a lead-gen tool to pick up AUM and sell annuities.
